Episode 9: The Biggest Debate There is in Photography
Quick! Take this hot potato I’m throwing you! Is it photography? Or is it art? Or is it (gasp) both?!
Frankly this can get pretty polarizing. People feel strongly about it, and I LOVE it. Because that means people care about what they are doing, and we should all care so much about something we do.
It is important to think about how you view your work no matter what side of the debate you fall on. This conversation is not just about if photography is art, but instead peels back the layers of programming that exist in our everyday life through media, societal pressures and limiting beliefs.
Yes, really. It is not a conversation for the faint of heart AND it has the potential to completely change how you think about the work you create. The ripple effect of this alone is huge. I can pinpoint the moment my work started gaining momentum (yep, it’s when I started to think and act like an artist)
In this episode we explore a lot of topics, but some of my favourites are:
How my upbringing biased me against art
How the value of your work changes when the way you think about it changes
How we are societally programmed to think about art
When you finish listening, I'd love to hear your biggest takeaway from today’s episode. Take a screenshot of you listening on your device, share it to your Instagram or Facebook stories and tag me. @kristinerosephotography
And if you want to take the conversation deeper I’d love to have you inside my podcast Facebook group here!
